My name is Jack Barry.
(I’m the tallest guy in the picture.)
I am a native New Yorker, raised on Long Island, from where I moved to Finland in 1980. My first Finnish home was in Lappeenranta, where I taught English at the Finnish-American Society and played basketball on the local YMCA team.
For the next 20 years, I taught communication skills at primary and secondary schools, the University of Helsinki, and at vocational institutions and adult education centers around Finland, e.g. in Lappeenranta, Lapua, Seinäjoki, Forssa, Vantaa, Helsinki and Espoo.
While teaching the humanities at the University of Helsinki in 1988-89, I was introduced to the public sector through a civil engineer who came to me for English pronunciation practice for his new work assignment at the World Bank in Washington D.C. He recommended that I teach English to the employees at the Finnish Road and Waterways Administration (now Finnish Transport Agency) located in Pasila.
I then started my company ‘English with Jack’ for training enthusiastic learners interested in improving their communication skills in the traffic and transportation, civil engineering, housing, environment, and medical sectors.
Now living in Espoo, I bring 36 years of experience and enjoyment to language learning for business and leisure purposes. My hobbies include cycling, photography, contemporary American poetry and swimming.
